Dragon Ball Super SUPER HERO: Akira Toriyama gives his opinion on the film

I was finally able to see the film in its final version. In short, it’s an incredible animated film! Well, I’m the original author, so maybe it’s not too convincing for me to say things like that, but even so, I got carried away watching it! I may be an old man, but I was really excited.

Before that, stories were set in space or other large-scale settings like this, so this time I wanted to take things back to their roots and set the story in a small area of Earth. Also, the enemy is the Red Ribbon Army, which didn’t make much of a splash during the manga’s original serialization. And to top it off, Goku and Vegeta aren’t the protagonists. As I was trying to make it an interesting story, I was always worried that it would be a bit simple. That’s when director Kodama and the outstanding animation team arrived.

Although the story might have been small in scale by recent Dragon Ball standards, they managed to make it an unparalleled incredible film, thanks to their rare talent and cutting-edge visuals! The battles in the second part gave me goosebumps, like the fight scene in the pouring rain. The skillful composition was so intense that I became numb with adrenaline! Piccolo is so cool! And Gohan is so cool! And Gamma 1 and Gamma 2… everyone is so cool!

I’m usually not too enthusiastic about my own works, but I ended up having thoughts like this before I knew what hit me. this is the first time that it happens to me. At that point, I realized that all the trouble I had to troubleshoot with my editor was worth it. All thanks to the director Kodama and the anime team, who worked much harder than me, and the many team members and voice actors who supported them, and my editor at Shueisha, who played a major role in making the best movie possible.

I have nothing but gratitude to all of them. I am really satisfied. If someone has doubts and thinks “Dragon Ball, uh…?” I will say just trust me and go see. I guarantee your heart will race when you leave the cinema!
